Overview

Overview

This volume of Holst's chamber operas shows the composer's intentions through his autograph manuscript.
These autograph volumes come as close to the composer's intentions as it is possible to do. They are an invaluable source of reference to set beside the printed score, revealing precisely what Holst wrote, and thus making clear any use of an assistant or editorial intervention.

Reviews

This handsome volume runs to some 200 pages and is beautifully produced in every respect. It contains full-sized facsimiles of Savitri and The Wandering Scholar, short introductions by the editor and textual collations giving a detailed comparison of the MSS with the published versions. Holst's musical handwriting was clear and strong, and in this volume it establishes a vivid presence. A special sort of magic is involved here . MUSICAL TIMES
