Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
As members of an independent, employee-owned academic press at the forefront of scholarly research, we at Boydell & Brewer understand the power we hold to enact positive change within an industry that has historically been white, middle class and able-bodied. We strive to place the values of diversity, equity, justice and inclusion at the core of our company culture and we seek to constantly engage with these values to promote inclusive practices in our publications and through our business activities. We recognize also that this work is ongoing and requires continuous commitment, time, resources and reflection from all staff.
Open access
We have participated in subsidized open access initiatives to make our publications available to a broader audience free of cost, including the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot and Knowledge Unlatched. We also offer an author-funded open access program for all books. You can learn more and view our open access publications here.
Ebook accessibility
Boydell & Brewer is working to provide accessible experiences for all users, regardless of ability or impairments. As part of this pledge, we strive to comply with the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) to ensure our eBooks meet global accessibility standards. Most of our books are available in ePDF and reflowable ePUB formats. In 2022 we began requesting alt text from authors to enhance their illustrative material by improving eBook accessibility for visually impaired users. Where eBook conversion is outsourced and not worked on in house, Boydell & Brewer is proud to be working with suppliers who are certified by Benetech’s Global Certified Accessible Program.
Our commitment to providing accessible content is ongoing work. If you have any suggestions or insights that could help us to improve the accessibility of our e-editions, please send an email to [email protected].
