Derek Brewer

All of us who work or are connected with Boydell & Brewer Limited were saddened to learn of the death of Derek Brewer, following so soon after the death of his wife, Elisabeth. Much has been written about Derek’s enormous contribution to the scholarly world and this has included mention of what he brought to academic publishing. As the name of the Group suggests, his name and influence in medieval literature studies was (and remains) widely regarded. As a young publishing company in the 1970s, we were fortunate that the paths of Derek and Richard Barber crossed, for it was that which enabled us to bring together their respective interests and build our reputation as scholarly publishers. Whilst the spread of our lists has widened greatly since those early days, our place in academic publishing would not have been possible without the much valued inspiration and determination which Derek and indeed Elisabeth brought with them. We shall miss them enormously and extend our sympathies to his family and wide circle of friends.
