A new way for historians and anthropologists to study both prophets and prophecy.

The purpose of this book is to move towards a clearer understanding of the history of prophets within the region of East Africa, and to give an analytical account of the different forms prophecy has taken over the years from placeto place. The book takes a new look at the active dialogue between the prophets and the communities whom they addressed. It suggests that this dialogue continues today as politicians and activists throughout the region still lookto prophetic traditions, garnering interpretations of the past in order to provide the validation of prophetic wisdom and heroes for the present.

"The punning title refers both to the function of prophets in revealing knowledge and to the efforts of the editors in the introduction to discover what prophets are..." Wyatt MacGaffey, JOURNAL OF AFRICAN HISTORY
"...innovative in their analytical use of oral data but traditional in their rigour... -" P.W.T.Baxter, formerly University of Manchester
